One Hundred European Boys and Girls Complete Their Bar/Bat Mitzvah Trip to Israel

The youths, some of which come from families who know nothing at all about Jewish life, traveled throughout Israel to gain familiarity with Judaism • The climax of the trip was a bar/bat mitzvah celebration at the Western Wall, attended by Israel’s Chief Rabbis and other notable public figures • The Ministry of Jerusalem Affairs funded an event in the Cave of Zedekiah • Philanthropist Reb Moti Sonnenfeld and business magnate Rami Levi participated in funding the trip • Special thanks go to Rabbi Eliyahu Edelkopf, director of the Foundation for the Development of European Jewry, for all his assistance.

The Rabbinical Centre of Europe and the European Jewish Association (EJA) have turned to Poland’s President Andrzej Duda, asking him to postpone issuing a final decision on the “Holocaust Law” until the debating parties have a chance to meet.

Hundreds of sets of arbaah minim of the highest standards were sent to Jewish communities. • A sofer STaM from Israel arrived especially to repair mezuzos and tefillin. • A unique educational workshop on the Yamim Tovim of Tishrei was produced, including animated films. It was translated into several languages to help community rabbis teach children in Jewish schools and Sunday schools in European cities about the holidays.

Chief Rabbi Lau Visits Jewish Communities in Hungary

In the course of his visit, Chief Rabbi Lau met with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and thanked him for his warm relationship with Hungarian Jewry and asked that four synagogues be returned to the stewardship of the local Jews. He praised Rabbi Baruch Oberlander and Rabbi Shlomo Kovesh for their leadership and civic activities. While he was there, a new slaughterhouse for geese, under the auspices of Israel’s Chief Rabbinate, was inaugurated. The meat will be marketed all over the globe.

Chief Rabbi David Lau, along with a group of VIPs from Israel, came last week to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of Jewish activities in Estonia. The group was led by philanthropist Alexander Bronstein, who funded the building of the community center ten years ago. Rabbi Lau commented, “I was amazed to find functioning minyanim here.”

The number of anti-Semitic incidents reported in Germany this year now stands at 461, compared with 194 last year. In London there was a 62 percent increase in attacks against Jews. In the United States there has been a 45 percent increase in the number of anti-Semitic incidents reported on campuses.
